Gyergyószárhegy (Lăzarea) is the host village of the 28th Harghita county Carnival Send-off. At this event, organized since 1993, the participants are the folk groups of the Szekler villages where the tradition of the Carnival Send-off is still living or where it has been renewed. The folk groups are presenting their traditional carnival play in different areas of the host village and after that, in a few days (on Shrove Tuesday or on Ash Wednesday, depending on the tradition of the region) in their own villages.
The event offers a great opportunity and a common ground of research for scientists, folklorists and anthropologists as well.
On Saturday, 22th of February 2020 the traditional groups are going over the streets of Lăzarea, than everybody meets in the center of Lăzarea.
Participant traditional groups are from: Ocna de Jos, Bârzava, Ciceu, Armăşeni, Sâncrăieni, Sânsimion, Cioboteni, Ditrău, Remetea, Plăieşii de Jos,Vlăhiţa, Sândominic and Lăzarea.
You are welcome to take part in the Szekler Carnival Send-off festival, to taste the traditional food and drinks, as well as to let you go with the flow of the “Farsang” feeling.

The Cultural Center of Harghita County will assure a transfer bus from Miercurea Ciuc to Lăzarea on the day of the event. If you would like to join the transfer, you are welcome to book a seat, daily between 8–15 hours on the following phone no.: 0040-266-372.044. Departure from Miercurea Ciuc will be on Saturday, 22 February at 9.30 am from the “Csíki Játékszín” Theatre, and departure from Lăzarea at 5 pm.
